The United States Golf Association (USGA), which is the regulating body of golf rules, permitted players to “anchor” their putters for a considerable amount of time. The golfer would “anchor” the butt end of the putter against their body in order to achieve a higher level of stability. This meant that they utilized a putter that was longer than the typical putter. It is no longer permitted to do this in golf contests that are sanctioned by the USGA.
Usage
I would not advocate getting a long putter at this time because the rules of golf stipulate that anchoring a putter is no longer allowed. This change took effect in January of 2016.
